Girls Who Code is a nonprofit organization that aims to re-write the gender gap in technology by introducing computer science to girls at a young age. Through corporate sponsorships and volunteers, GWC reaches over 185,000 girls from 4th-12th grade through after-school programs, summer immersion programs, and summer classes.
This was the first year of GWC at Cox Mill HS. Although most GWC after-school programs run for 10-15 weeks, there was enough interest in the club to continue throughout the entire school year. We met for a total of 8 months each week for an hour afterschool, discussing women in technology and tech careers over snacks - and of course, coding!! Each week, we'd discuss interesting topics about what's new in tech (over snacks) and work on our projects, which we're proud to showcase on this site.
Our goal is to create the next generation of female engineers and tech leaders. We have also helped to start a club at the elementary school across the street. Several of us volunteer at the elementary school club to share our coding knowledge and inspire these girls to pursue STEM. It's important to give back.
Lily Zhang facilitated this club with the support of Holly Harris, Marsha Robeson, and Sandy Maroney.
